How to: Protect your laptop's screen

While laptop's are designed to keep all components as safe as possible, there are nevertheless extra things you can do to keep it as protected as possible. While the most obvious step is to buy a well-padded carry case, you can also invest is a small cloth to keep the screen as well protected as possible
.
The reason for doing this is, if pressure is applied to the lid of your laptop, the laptop's keyboard can easily press against the screen and cause it to become scratched. By placing a soft cloth between the keyboard and screen when travelling, you can ensure that no damage will be caused, making it a very cheap and easy way to care for your portable.

OPEN ID: Login Anywhere over World

OpenID Basic Features

Most websites require a user to login before they can start using their website. So,users are forced to signup at every single website they intend to use.The signup process is usually a time consuming process since email verification is mostly necessary in order to verify the validity of the user.

Yahoo's id can be used across its network (email, groups, answers etc),and Google's id can be used on its network (gmail, gtalk, blogger etc) and Microsoft has Passport (mail,Spaces, and all MS services including Windows itself).
But what about the other majority of internet not owned by Y!,Google or MS? Its where OpenID comes to the rescue.
Started in 2005, OpenID eliminates the need for multiple usernames across different websites. Its designed by the OpenId foundation which provides it as a open source implementation. OpenID can be signed up using one of the OpenID providers. Once signed up,it can be used across the network of websites that support OpenID.OpenID foundation claims that OpenID is supported by more than 50,000 websites.
Some major websites include blogger, wordpress, livejournal, scribd, digg, dailymotion, facebook etc.,and more and more websites are starting to support OpenID gradually.

Advantages
OpenID offers users ease of use and there is no need to sign up in websites supporting OpenID.
For website owners, the advantage is that more users will be signed up for their website since users dont need to signup separately, and users only need to sign in into OpenID and join the website.
So,users can easily join an OpenId supporting website.Thats a plus for both users as well as website owners.
Moreover, OpenID can be easily implemented by website owners.
And regarding security, the OpenId password will not be submitted to the website, it will be submitted only to the OpenID provider who acts as the middleman in the sign-in process.

FREE Sony Laptop Vaio FW

The Sony Vaio X505 has held the title for the thinnest / lightest laptop for a while and this may be taken of it if this prototype laptop gets released.

The Intel-sponsored Metro Laptop would become the Worlds Thinnest Laptop if it gets into production, the aim is to push portability to another level with a 2.2-pound, 0.7-inch thick Metro laptop.

This could redefine slim computing if it’s ever built, but for now just look at the photo and think nice… as that’s as close as any of us will get for some time yet.

Overview
It's big news whenever Apple announces new products and now Apple’s bestselling consumer notebook receives the long rumored major redesign that is no doubt, another stunner. Just when you thought Apple couldn’t make the previous generation MacBook any better, they come around and offer this aluminum and glass beauty that is even thinner, lighter, and more powerful than before. Now that Apple has brought its renewed MacBooks ($1299 starting) and MacBook Pros ($1999 starting) even closer together by offering the same design, engineering, and -for the first time on the MacBook - aluminum body to both notebook lines, the once straightforward consumer and pro-line product differentiation is slowly fading away. Is this the best MacBook to date? Is it safe to call the MacBook, the MacBook Pro "mini"? Read on.

Design
The new MacBook and MacBook Pro make some significant strides in the design department. First, the MacBook for the first time, joins the MacBook Pro in offering an all-aluminum body, ditching the white polycarbonate plastic that once defined the consumer line. In fact, both machines look pretty much identical to each other - offering a black glass bezel screen and black "chiclet-style" keyboards to reflect the new Apple design direction first introduced with the current iMac and iPhone. It's a stunner for sure. The exterior borrows cues from the MacBook Air using tapered edges that trick you into thinking it's even thinner than it already is. The magnetic latch opens and closes the display with buttery smoothness and without mechanical parts. Aa satisfyingly solid "thunk" can be heard when closed. Available in the more expensive $1599 model are LED backlit keys - a first for the MacBook.

Aside from the switch to a fully aluminum casing that replaces the now-defunct white plastic and/or black matte finish of the previous generation, Apple is touting its new manufacturing process as a technological and engineering breakthrough. Using a full slab of aluminum to construct the MacBook and MacBook Pro, not only does this revolutionary process create a body and chassis that is much stiffer with no flexing, these new notebooks use less mechanical screws, parts and pieces to construct together, and thus allow Apple is able to achieve a lighter and thinner product. The result is a notebook that is so clean and so sleek looking in design, it's devoid of any evidence of screws to piece it together and without any vents, confirms that this new design doubles as an effective heatsink.

While it's nice to see the MacBook now offer the same look and materials as the MacBook Pro, Apple may now run the risk of cannibalizing sales of its own pricier MacBook Pros, as they both look almost identical to each other and features-wise, the line between the two is blurring. Call it the MacBook Pro mini if you will in appearance, Apple has revolutionized a new way to build quality notebooks that are also environmental friendly.

Size and Weight
Impressively, the new MacBook is even thinner and lighter than before, achieving a thickness of only .95 " - the same as the new MacBook Pro. At 4.5 pounds, the new MacBook is 1.5 pounds lighter than the outgoing model with weight evenly distributed across thanks to its unibody construction (read: less parts). At 12.78" x 8.94", the new machines are pretty much identical in dimensions to the last generation models.

Keyboard
Love it or hate it, Apple has now transitioned its entire Mac lineup to the retro-looking "chiclet-style" keyboard with the new MacBooks. Rather than color match the keys with the aluminum body, Apple's new design direction employs the use of black keys to give the notebook an interesting design contrast. The downside of having black keys is noticeable fingerprint smudging from oily fingers; At least it won't look and get dirty like the older white MacBooks. Aesthetics aside, the full-size keyboard is a real pleasure to type on with very solid and satisfying clicks. The keys may be flat and spaced out, but it's oh-so-comfortable to type on with just the right amount of key travel and spring action. The higher end model also offers LED backlit keys for the first time on a MacBook - once again, blurring the lines between the MacBook and MacBook Pro in features.

Display
With a gorgeous 13.3" LED-backlit LCD screen fully encased beneath a black bezeled glass, the MacBook's display is stunning to look at even when powered off. The glossy finish makes colors really pop and adds to its enhanced vibrance, but at the cost of massive glare, making outdoor viewing difficult. Indoor viewing is not as bad, but reflections abound so be mindful of viewing angles and tilt adjustments. At first glance, the display seems identical to the previous MacBook screen with the same 1280x800 native resolution, but thanks to the new LED-backlighting, the display is evenly lit across the screen and noticeably brighter than the previous generation models. Watching movies was a real treat even though you'll find yourself seeing your own reflection in lighted areas. But when compared to the MacBook Pro's larger screen, the MacBook's picture quality is still inferior and you'll notice the contrast and blacks drop out when viewed from an angle - The MacBook Pro's, on the otherhand, looks great at any angle. This is a big reason why Apple would like for you to pay the extra money to go Pro for the better screen. A built-in iSight camera is included as well like before on the top of the display.

Buttonless Glass Trackpad
Apple once again leads the competition by offering zero buttons...no really! Apple has created the first "buttonless" trackpad built entirely of glass that also includes multi-touch technology. The entire trackpad is essential a button in itself where pushing down creates a solid click to confirm depresses. While it takes getting used to at first, the trackpad actually turns out to be very intuitive with a smooth glossy feel. The MacBook Air introduced 3-finger scrolling and the MacBook and MacBook Pro now offer 4-finger multi-touch scrolling for calling upon Expose and Spaces functionality. While quirky, you'll soon appreciate the wonders the new glassy trackpad's buttonless design provides.

Connectivity
Apple has shrewdly and neatly moved all ports to the left side of the notebook (the right side now occupies the lone optical drive), giving it a very clean and organized look so there's no cluttered wires coming out of either side. With the MacBook, you get 2 USB 2.0 ports, gigabit ethernet port, audio in/out jacks, MagSafe charge port, and the new mini DisplayPort that replaces the old mini-DVI out in an effort to save precious component space. Also of convenience is the battery meter on the same side. In a surprising move, Apple has curiously decided to omit FireWire in the new MacBook that was previous made standard across the entire Mac lineup. Now, the only way for media heads to take advantage of FireWire connectivity is to shell up the $700 for the MacBook Pro or buy a pricey adapter. While most people can argue that FireWire's adoption is dwindling in favor of USB, one of the unique things that made FireWire so special for Macs is the target disk feature, allowing the computer to boot OS X off any FireWire external drive. Call it cost-cutting or the death of FireWire adoption, we call it a disappointment.

The DisplayPort is another interesting move on Apple's part to capitalize on a new standard that not only saves component space from the larger DVI and mini-DVI ports, but transitions across all future Macs. Unfortunately, Apple is skimping on the accessories as you'll have to shell the hefty $99 for the mini DisplayPort adapter kit to connect an external monitor. Harsh.

For the common consumer, the MacBook provides just enough of what you need and nothing you don't in terms of available ports. Trimming the fat, Apple still doesn't offer any built-in digital card reader into the unit when compared to the competition and ExpressCard is a feature you'll only find on the MacBook Pro. Limited but more than sufficient.

Upgrading
One of the pains of owning an Apple notebook before was the difficulty in upgrading the basic hardware components. It took a few dozen tiny screws just to get to the harddrive! Not so with these new notebooks. Apple clearly did it's homework when redesigning the MacBook and MacBook Pro, making it very easy to open and upgrade. Only 2 aluminum plates pieces hold the base together, providing easy access into the harddrive compartment and RAM slots through a simple flip of a latche. The big news is the removable battery, now tucked neatly beneath one panel next to the hard drive. Upgrading is limited to your standard harddrive upgrade (SATA or SSD) and adding more RAM (up to 4GB max).

Battery Life: 187 minutes Recharge Time: 122 minutes

Features:

The MacBook is a real engineering marvel. It's stunning good looks compliment the bevy of new advanced technology and engineering features. The Intel Core2Duo 2.0Ghz model ($1299) we received proved plenty capable of handling most common computing tasks and comes with a 160gb harddrive and 2gb of RAM (with the 1066Mhz FSB). A 2.4Ghz model is available as well for an additional $300 sticker price and includes a 250Gb SATA drive. Both models offer the option of the pricey but fast SSD drive.

Ditching the weak integrated graphics chipset from Intel, the MacBook finally offers a dedicated true graphics engine in the form of the nVidia GeForce 9400M making for better handling of 3D graphics and video. The results, are quite noticeable in speed and video performance throughout the system. Another great feature with this card is that it results in lower heat generation as the CPU no longer has to work so hard in processing these tasks. However, don't expect the GPU to bowl you over in graphics-heavy applications though (read gaming). But, the 9400M certainly does pack a good amount of 3D punch to your videos, media, and gaming sessions, especially with the likes of the new Adobe Photoshop utilizing thus features.

Wireless-N, Bluetooth, SuperDrive and iSight are all standard features as usual.

Heat and noise wasn't much of an issue with the new MacBooks thanks to the entire aluminum unibody acting as a giant heatsink. The notebook runs warm but not quite as hot as older models and a soft hum can be heard only when the fan kicks in intermittently. No issues here. In our battery tests, watching a DVD yielded about 2:40 of juice, and in basic tasks such as web browsing and word processing, a respectable 4:30 of life.

Conclusion
Overall, we found the new MacBook a real pleasure to use as with all Mac products we've tested. It's a gorgeous, sexy piece of machinery and certainly the best MacBook yet. But we do question Apple's decision to make the MacBook so closely identical in looks and features to the MacBook Pro... Anyway, at $1299 starting, it's a tad more expensive than we had hoped it would be, but you do get a lot for your money namely the aluminum casing, glassy multi-touch buttonless trackpad and of course, the revolutionary unibody "brick" construction and for a whole $700 cheaper than the cheapest MacBook Pro model. Nonetheless it's a excellent buy for one of the best notebooks around on the market. Some may not like Apple's new design direction (myself included) utilizing black keys to contrast the aluminum, but there's no denying this is one of the best looking laptops available.

Bottom Line:
With a dedicated GPU and aluminum body, it might be "safe" to call the MacBook the "true" successor to the highly heralded Powerbook 12". Well...almost - the lack of FireWire is a serious hit and it's still a tad too big. What about calling it a MacBook Pro mini? Not quite but its darn close. A better display and graphics card, Firewire, ExpressCard slot, and LED keys are all that gets in the way of the $700 difference, features wise. Yet, the lines between the consumer and pro models are fading away ever so slightly...Suddenly $1299 feels like a great bargain.

Big Blue Integrates 802.11b with New Notebook

IBM's new ThinkPad T23 features a new security chip subsystem and integrated 802.11b capabilities.

IBM Corp. Monday unveiled the ThinkPad T23, the first in its new series of high-performance ThinkPad T notebooks with a new security chip subsystem and integrated 802.11b capabilities.

The T23 features the Mobile Intel Pentium III Processor-M, utilizing the SpeedStep technology which offers speeds of up to 1.13 GHz, and weighs in at 4.8 lbs.

The new security chip subsystem, dubbed the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem "offers Smart Card-like features at a fraction of the cost and supports industry standards."

Combined with Virtual Private Networking (VPN) technology, IBM said the embedded security subsystem offers users more secure 802.11b communication using standard tools and technology. This is important because the T23 offers integrated wireless 802.11b capabilities, with select models of the T23 featuring a dual antenna system built into the display cover in order to increase signal strength. IBM said the 802.11b radio is integrated via mini-PCI eliminating the need for a PC Card and other "bump" antenna for wireless LAN applications.

IBM said the wireless models come fully integrated with V.92 ready modems and 10/100 Ethernet. Options include a Bluetooth PC Card or UltraPort Module.

"The new ThinkPad T23 represents proof of concept for many of our most advanced mobile technologies," said Rick McGee, vice president of marketing, IBM Personal Device Brands. "But more importantly, it reaffirms IBM's commitment to delivering products that help take the worry and effort out of key technologies like wireless networking and security."

Customers can choose between a 15GB hard drive and the 48GB Travelstar hard drive, which IBM claims is the fastest notebook drive on the market at 5400 RPM. All options come with standard 128MB of memory, expandable to 1GB. The T23 features a 6-cell lithium ion battery which the company said offers more than three hours of battery life. The T23 also includes all standard ports, as well as an additional USB port and S-video out.

The company said the new notebook model will be generally available in several weeks, with prices ranging from $2,279 to $3,959. They come preloaded with Microsoft Windows 98 or Windows 2000 Professional.

Additionally, IBM unveiled its new High Rate Wireless LAN Gateway, also based on 802.11b technology, intended as the networking hub of small business and home office environments. The Gateway, available Aug. 1, and priced at $299, also allows for the sharing of a single high-speed cable or DSL account.

ACER ASPIRE 5520 REVIEW

Introduction
This is a good laptop from Acer with a good design and good features, let’s take a closer look.

Design
The design for the Acer Aspire 5520 is nice with a matte black color, curved angles and couple of sharp lines. The case dimensions are 426x366x274 mm, and weight is 2.75kg. The screen opening mechanism is a little bit annoying because you need to hands to open and close the laptop simply because it is so stiff and when you are closing the screen the mechanism doesn’t always lock it. The laptop could also been just a little bit thinner but overall it looks good in my eyes. The speakers, keyboard and touchpad are made in good quality here and seem to be solid overall.

The machine comes with many good features you will get facilities like Ethernet, Wireless, modem, 4 USB connectors, ExpressCard 54 slot, D-Sub output for the monitor, S-Video out, SPDIF, FireWire, integrated mic, headphone out, mic in, audio out, 5 in 1 card reader, 1.3 MP webcam etc.

Performance
This model comes with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 mobile TK-53 processor running at 1.7 GHz with Nvidia’s GeFroce 7000M graphic card. The performance is not that much to brag about ob this machine and you will not be able to play many games simply because the graphic card is not strong enough. You also get 1 GB ram which is not enough to run Windows Vista so if you plan on getting this
laptop you should stick to Windows XP. On PCMarks we got a score of 2821 points, if this laptop only had a little bit stronger graphic card the performance would have been a lot better overall. However the 160 GB hard drive will be able to store most of your files so the storage place is good. The screen is simply a 15-incher running on a 1280x800 resolution. The screen is good overall with and the viewing angels are good. The battery life lasted a little bit over 2 hours. 2 hours and 10 minutes to be exact, this is average for a laptop in this price class and quite acceptable.

Conclusion
This machine is good as a freshman laptop but not recommended for the gamers. The hardware in the laptop is great all except from the poor graphic card. You will not be able to run Windows Vista good on this machine so I recommend running Windows XP. However this machine works great if you just want to surf the internet and, work and don’t play to many high-end games.

Pros
+ Good performance except from the graphic card
+ Good features and connection facilities

Cons
- Poor graphic card
- Slow with Windows Vista

ACER ASPIRE 4720 REVIEW

A solution which is meant for good performance-price ratio, this one is based on the Intel Santa Rosa platform. A good build, nice performance is what this laptop is about. Lets discover more

Design
All black exteriors, and all white interiors is a nice combination which has been employed. The external is a shiny surface which is quite prone to fingerprints. The left of the product has VGA, S-video, Ethernet, 2 Usb slots and the Express card reader slot. The right has the DVD/CD writer , 2 more USB ports and an Adapter slot. The headphone, mic ports are under the lid along with the volume controller. Widescreen display , webcam and a microphone was encountered when the laptop was opened. Below the screen are the WiFi/ bluetooth toggle keys and shortucts for mail applications and browser etc. The keyboard is standard laptop sized one, followed by a touchpad below. The touchpad has 4-way mechanical scrolling button.

The overall build quality is good, quite sturdy and absolutely no creaking. Weighing at 2.45 kgs , its not much but a little bulky to carry around. The screen is of great quality, and sharp images are produced. Keypad is smooth like all others, and the touchpad is above average.

Performance
The performance of the machine was quite good. It achieved a 3461 score in the PCmark test. 3DMark 06
score was 527 which is quite good regarding the fact that the GPU is an onboard X3100. The Core-2Duo processor achieves the desired performance marks. 1Gb DDR-2 RAM is sufficient for today's business applications and light gaming. The Santa Rosa platform made this perform better than its AMD sibling. Windows Vista ran perfectly smooth, and overall performance was quite good. For average games this is a complete solution , but if you are thinking of high-end gaming with this one, just miss this one. Its just meant for a casual gaming experience, and business applications, no doubt.

Conclusion
The laptop is a good performer at the price for which it retails. It definitely strikes a good chord in the Value For Money department. The battery life lasted 2 hrs 20 mins on full load, so you can expect it to go upto 3 hrs in power saving mode. Priced a little more than its AMD sibling , the increment in the performance is worth this extra.

Pros
+ SantaRosa platform
+ Well priced
+ Good build and battery life.

Cons
- Average memory performance
- A little bulky in design

ACER FERRARI 1005WTMi REVIEW

A notebook, which is a result of collaboration of 4 major companies in their respective fields viz. Acer, Ferrari, AMD, Ati, is put through our tests, and we smell burning performance. Or is it the burning engine, a failure ? Lets find out.

Design
The laptop has a nice finish, made by carbon fibres, with the Ferrari logo styling the top. The product weighs 1.60 kgs which is not at all heavy. The laptop is slim, and the overall built quality is good. The front face of the laptop has a 5 in 1 card reader which supports Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Multimedia card, xD-card, Secure digital. Speakers line the right and left of the front panel, along with the audio ports at the center. The audio ports consist of Line-In jack, headphone with Spdif support. 2 switches at center control bluetooth and WiFi, and an Infrared port right next to them. Left of the laptop has the Kensington lock, IEEE 1394 port, USB 2.0 , PC-card slot. Cool air-vents make their presence felt at the left side. Right has the LAN , modem, external VGA port and 2 more USB ports.

The screen is a 12.1” WXGA TFT which supports 1280x800 resolution, and it is very crisp and sharp. There is a 225 degree rotating webcam on top of the screen, and a LED which shows the status of the webcam. Protective rubber pads around the screen protect the screen from damage. A microphone is place right under the screen , near the Acer logo. They keyboard is surrounded by a stylish brushed-metal design, which gives it a sporty look. Power key is present on topleft corner and caps, num , HDD LEDs are present on the top of the keypad. 4 buttons viz. P for programmable, e for Acer empowering, email and web browser are provided which makes accessing these applications a breeze. The touchpad is
quite nice with Ferrari logo on it. Four LEDs on the base show the power , bluetooth, WiFi, and battery status. Metal grills around the laptop conceal the speakers. The product comes with a external HD-DVD drive which can be connected via Firewire interface.

The product comes bundled with a VoIP phone, which was sleek , used bluetooth to connect with the laptop operation and charged via PC port. It could be switched ON/OFF to save battery.

Performance
The laptop had a sluggish feel to it, because if so many utilities installed. It achieved a decent score of 2497 in PCMark 05. A score of 1392 in 3DMarks, which is not at all good. The radeon Xpress 1150 chipset was the reason for this low score. The system is not meant for gaming , but otherwise the performance in other fields is fine. The ample storage space, Dual core AMD processor make the laptop good, but more RAM could have been added, because the current 512MB is not something to rave about.

Conclusion
The performance is just average, not something which justifies its price. The Ferrari logo is the only major plus about the notebook, apart from the amazing design factor. Only for Ferrari fans!

Pros
+ Good design, build
+ Ample storage and processor power

Cons
- Sluggish behavior
- Poor Graphics
Value For Money

ACER ASPIRE GEMSTONE 7720G REVIEW

This latest thing from Acer aims more at performance rather than portability. A more of a use-at-home machine, it is grilled through to gain a knowledge of its power. So, here it goes..

Design
Employing the company's new Gemstone design, we have a curvy babe on our hands, which is a little plastic in the feel. The laptop looks quite sturdy at the first glance, and so it is. Weighing at around 3.6 kgs, its quite heavy and not suitable for carrying around. The screen of the notebook is a 17” and has been supplied with a glossy touch to increase the color quality. This makes an impact on the screens clarity and reflectivity issues were faced to a large extent. Supporting a maximum resolution of 1440x900 pixels, this one is equipped to a certain extent but cannot match the quality and clarity of the 1920x1080 resolution. 4 USB ports, 2 on each flank, 1 Firewire port, and a HD-DVD drive which is so current gen.

Performance
The performance of the laptop is worth a look. The specification of the machine boasts of a 2Ghz Core-2-Duo processor, 2GB Ram, 2 160GB hard disks , making a total of 320GB. Also, a 8400M graphics accelerator has been included which can take care of your craving for
that frag session with your close buddies. In the real world tests, the laptop achieved a decent score of 71 in WorldBench, and an average 13fps on medium-high settings in various games. The battery life of the notebook is nothing worth mentioning. It lasted a maximum of 80 minutes, which is plain average for it.

Conclusion
The laptop hits well in performance tab, but fails to impress in the design and portability category. The decent specification, ample storage , good connection methods like WiFi, a decent performance in casual gaming are all a plus. So before buying this, consider well if you can adjust with the poor screen, low battery, not-so ergonomic build.

Pros
+ Good performance-price ratio
+ Ample storage

Cons
- Poor screen, and reflectivity problems
- Bad designing
- Battery life is not satisfactory

ACER TRAVELMATE 2480-2153 REVIEW

A blend of an awesome price tag, decent performance and a plethora of features, this notebook from Acer is a sure shot winner.

Design
The notebook is a silver-black case which delivers a good impression on the buyer. On opening the lid, you encounter a 14.1” widescreen which is capable of supporting a maximum resolution of 1280x800. It has a matte finish, which makes regular work easy , but the experience while watching movies or playing games was not so good. The keyboard deserves a special mention here, with an ergonomic shape in the form of a smiley, it had a good response and feel. There is a 5-in-1 card slot and an Express-Card slot on the left side of the product, along with a USB port and a S-Video port. The rear has the Ethernet port and more USB ports. The absence of a DVD-writer can be attributed to the low cost of the laptop.

Performance
The laptop has an average configuration of 1.6Mhz Celeron-M processor, and it did not perform too
well on PCMark05. Most business application would run smoothly but multi-tasking might be a bit problematic owing to the low-end processor. 512MB DDR2 RAM, 80GB HDD complete its basic set of components and the configuration is not something worth buying the laptop for. The battery life is good enough and should last around 2.5 hours while doing normal chores.

Conclusion
The laptop should be a good option for students and light users and the price tag is definitely great for this class. The battery life is great and the amount of connectivity options provided is a definite plus!

Pros
+ Very competitive pricing
+ Good battery life

Cons
- Average performance
- Poor screen

ACER FERRARI 1100 REVIEW

The latest in the Ferrari series by Acer, this one is a top of the line product, with quite a decent configuration. The performance is fast, the design is slick but the power dies out soon.

Design
The design and color scheme is like the Ferrari brand only, with the lid having the familiar race style check pattern and the Ferrari logo. They keyboard area is glossy while the carbon fiber is styled in a matte finish. The keys are a bit stiff for the normal keyset and the touchpad follows the same race check style. The laptop is ultra-portable and is very sleek, but it is a bit bulky and weighs around 4.4 pounds. The screen size is 12” and it supports a maximum resolution of 1280x800. The color quality is good but the screen suffers from reflectivity problems and a narrow viewing angle. A 1.3 MP web-cam sits on screen top for video conferencing etc. The connectivity options are average, with 3 USB ports, FireWire, VGA, S-Video, headphone/Mic ports, Ethernet and a 5-in-1 card slot.

Performance
The notebook comes with a formidable configuration, and has an AMD 2.3 GHz Turion X2 processor, 4GB RAM and 250 GB hard
drive. It achieves 2,680 PCMarks and 1,765 on 3DMark 03. The graphics subsystem suffers badly, and it is just average for a notebook of this kind. With the Ati onboard GPU, you can't expect to play latest games at good settings. The wireless performance is good and the included WiFi is able to get high speeds. The battery of the notebook lasted somewhere around 2.5 hours on full load, and it should be able to get 3+ hours runtime for normal applications and regular tasks.

Conclusion
The design scores a big one, and the performance is decent too. The only part which suffers is the graphics, and a better GPU could have been included. The battery is decent and the connectivity is good along with the networking. Overall, a great notebook.

Pros
+ Good screen
+ Great design

Cons
- Poor GPU
- A little costly

Acer adds a nice touch with the "Cine Dash" control on the left of the notebook. The Cine Dash is a touch sensitive media console that enables you to control things such as volume and media playback experience. He hinge like knuckle section is also a craftsman’s art. ACER TRAVELMATE 5720 REVIEW – ACERS CHEAP OPTION ON OFFER

Swathed in Acer's new magnesium alloy "Profile" chassis, the TravelMate 5720 can be furnished with a concrete selection of Intel Centrino Duo mobile processors and enough expediency to make your mobile computing a little more enjoyable. In this budget laptop a worthwhile procure compared to low-priced offerings from HP and Dell?

Design
The TravelMate 5720, with its lustrous black and grey trade design on the outside, is much nicer than I expected. It practically screams no-nonsense without appearing like your grandfather's hardware. Inside, there is an interesting metallic ribbon around the touch-pad and a shiny metallic strip which houses your emblematic LED indicator lights. The 5720 also comes with an impressive feature called DASP technology (Disk Anti-Shock Protection) which is a rubber damper under the hard disk.

Performance
For a 2.0GHz contemporary processor and a 5400 rpm hard drive I really expected better recital from the Acer. However, again, there is something with Acer build quality which doesn't always interpret into high quality. It takes about 2 minutes to finish starting up with these processes running: Norton Anti-virus, Photoshop Elements 3.0 Open Office, Quick starter, a calendar widget and the Acer business widget. When compacting with tasks, it is normally snappy.

Acer will have notebooks that can contend with the big boys in screens, but for now, there is nothing we can do but groan and squint a bit. The screen is an LCD, and a faded one. It's even more taciturn than the Aspire LCD, which I didn't think would be possible.

In terms of acoustic, the speakers are astoundingly great. The bass is repairable, and the sound is not metallic at all. This notebook is
quiet. The fan usually only runs at a perceptible level during installation processes that are bulky and processor intensive and at short intervals during expanded use. As for heat, there is nominal warming on the left palm rest. Otherwise, the notebook is virtually silent. Nice!

Acer asserts the battery life for the customary 6-cell battery to be about 4 to 6 hours. The 1st charge gave about 4 hours and 20 minutes, and charges afterwards, with nothing disabled and battery at upper limit power tolerated for 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Overall
I would surely recommend the Acer TravelMate 5720 to anyone on a financial plan who wants a state-of-the-art machine for cheap. While they often look routine compared to some laptop designs, for some people the simple palette will be pleasing, and the Acer TravelMate software will be deemed useful for everyone apart from Windows power users. The Acer TravelMate will be functional for students on a budget, and some small businesses.

Pros
+ Scuttles very cool and very quiet
+ Excellent price
+ Excellent interface, useful side panel keys

Cons
- Display can cause some eyestrain
- The keyboard is arced, enter key is differently shaped.
- Sluggish performance than some likely configured machines
